During the crisis caused by crop destruction and border closures, consumers are facing an extraordinary increase in vegetable prices, as the price of tomatoes has surprisingly reached Rs 550 per kilogram, making this kitchen essential more expensive than chicken meat.
A market survey conducted today in Mirpurkhas and other urban centers of the district revealed a massive increase in vegetable prices. Ginger is being sold at a staggering price of Rs 1600 per kg, while garlic is at Rs 400 per kg. Other essential items such as lemons are being sold for Rs 400, cauliflower for Rs 250, green chilies for Rs 200, and onions for Rs 120 per kilogram. Potatoes and spinach are also being sold at increased prices of Rs 70 and Rs 100 per kg, respectively.
Wholesalers at the main vegetable market have attributed the sharp price hike to a severe supply shortage. They explained that recent floods in Punjab have destroyed vegetable crops, while the closure of trade borders with Iran, India, and Afghanistan has halted the import of essential food items. The local crop of Mirpurkhas district, which could improve the situation, is not expected to reach the markets until December or January.
In response to the unbearable prices, many citizens have started using yogurt as a substitute for tomatoes in their daily meals. Frustrated by this situation, public circles are demanding immediate action from the local administration. They have demanded that the long-dormant market committee be activated to control illegal profiteering and stabilize the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities.
