Climate Justice Demanded: Senator Chishti Urges Wealthier Nations to Act After Pakistan’s $30 Billion Flood Catastrophe

In a powerful plea for global climate justice, Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti has called the devastating 2022 floods in Pakistan, which inflicted over USD 30 billion in economic losses, a “wake-up call for the world,” urging wealthier nations to provide equitable support to vulnerable countries on the frontlines of the environmental crisis.

The Senator delivered his impactful discourse at the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, where he underscored Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to humanitarian values and environmental advocacy, according to a statement released Wednesday by the Senate.

Senator Chishti pointed out that the catastrophic floods displaced millions of citizens, serving as stark evidence of Pakistan’s vulnerability. He appealed for the adoption of fairer global frameworks, the transfer of essential technology, and direct assistance to help nations like Pakistan build climate resilience and pursue sustainable development.

Shifting to a longstanding humanitarian effort, the senator drew attention to Pakistan’s extraordinary role in hosting over four million Afghan refugees for more than four decades. “Despite our limited resources, we have provided shelter, education, and livelihoods to millions,” he stated, highlighting one of the largest and most prolonged refugee situations in modern history.

He clarified that this continued support for the Afghan populace is rooted not just in obligation but in Pakistan’s core principles of regional peace, empathy, and resilience. This, he noted, reflects a deep compassion for human dignity even when facing significant pressures.

Senator Chishti’s remarks were met with widespread appreciation from international parliamentarians at the assembly. Delegates acknowledged Pakistan’s moral leadership on these critical issues, with the speech reinforcing the nation’s image as one that champions human dignity and advocates for global justice on the international stage.
