A comprehensive reform package introduced by the federal government is set to enhance coordination among various port-related institutions, significantly cutting cargo dwell time and lowering the cost of doing business, according to business leader Tariq Haleem.
Tariq Haleem, a former Chairman of the Pakistan Ship Agents Association (PSAA), stated today that the initiative announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is designed to improve systems at the nation”s ports and stimulate economic growth.
He elaborated that the reforms concentrate on crucial areas including institutional coordination, infrastructure, and transparency. The overarching goal is to create a more efficient trade and logistics framework to improve Pakistan”s global competitiveness.
The former Vice President of the FPCCI underscored the direct link between the country”s economic prosperity and the performance of its ports, describing them as the foundation for business expansion and the operation of major import-export systems.
The new measures were announced following a meeting of a private-sector working group that was established to formulate recommendations for improving port-related functions.
Haleem expressed his appreciation for the Prime Minister”s directive to implement a transparent auction system for abandoned cargo currently lying at ports.
He also welcomed a proposal to establish dedicated yards for such goods at various national ports, endorsing the plan to engage internationally renowned companies for their management.
In his comments, the business leader also emphasised the necessity of making the country”s third port, Gwadar Port, more functional. He called for more effective strategies to attract cargo and stressed that increased investment in the port is essential.
