Punjab authorities have reported a significant decrease in serious violent crimes during the month of December, with a 44% reduction in registered cases of gang rape of women and a 36% decrease in murder incidents compared to the same period last year.
Statistics released on Wednesday by IG Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar also showed a significant decrease in crimes against property. Calls to the police helpline regarding such crimes decreased by 49%. Specifically, calls related to dacoity decreased by 59%, while reports of street crime fell by 51%.
The most dramatic decrease was seen in vehicle-related crimes. Calls related to vehicle snatching decreased by 71%, motorcycle snatching by 72%, and car snatching incidents by 46%. Furthermore, reports of vehicle theft decreased by 55%, which includes a 73% decrease in car theft and a 54% decrease in motorcycle theft.
Other notable decreases include a 31% reduction in kidnapping cases and a 33% decrease in incidents of burglary and theft.
Inspector General Dr. Usman Anwar attributed these positive results to the effective strategies implemented under the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. He announced that the Safe Cities project is being expanded to the tehsil level and reiterated that the free registration of criminal cases is being ensured in all police stations.
The Inspector General concluded by reiterating the Punjab Police’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of citizens and their continuous efforts to eliminate crime from the province.
