Residents of Mirpurkhas are expressing severe distress over the poor performance of two newly established towns, which have failed to improve municipal services despite gaining full control of staff and resources previously managed by the City Corporation.
Several months ago, the Mirpurkhas City Corporation transferred its responsibilities to Syed Khadim Ali Shah Town and Mir Sher Muhammad Talpur Town, handing over its shops, vehicles, and the entire sanitation staff. This transfer assigned the responsibility for sanitation and other civic matters to the respective town and Union Council (UC) chairmen.
Despite the complete transfer of manpower and machinery, residents say there has been no tangible improvement in local conditions. A major source of public frustration is the persistent ambiguity over administrative boundaries, which has left many residents unsure of which town to approach with their grievances, an issue that has persisted for years due to the unclear demarcation of the towns and their union councils.
Corporation sources state that all sanitation staff and vehicles were provided to both towns under an agreed-upon distribution formula. The corporation also paid the staff’s salaries for several months post-transfer to ensure a smooth transition.
Despite this, citizens across all of the city’s union councils are reporting unsatisfactory delivery of municipal services. The situation is further complicated by the fact that neither town has initiated any new development schemes, leaving civic issues unresolved and public infrastructure in its previous state.
In light of the poor sanitation and deteriorating condition of municipal facilities, the affected public has demanded that officials from both towns take immediate and effective measures to provide the basic services for which they are now responsible.
