In a significant move aimed at prioritising animal welfare, Karachi’s Mayor has ordered the segregation of recreational rides from animal enclosures at the city”s zoo to foster a more peaceful environment for the wildlife.
The directive was issued during a high-level meeting of the Recreation Department, chaired by Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s head office, according to KMC information today. The session conducted a detailed review of improvements for the city’s recreational facilities, with a special emphasis on the Karachi Zoo and Safari Park.
A key decision was also reached to grant greater administrative and financial autonomy to both the Karachi Zoo and Safari Park. This strategic move is intended to allow the institutions to operate more independently and boost revenue, which will be reinvested to further upgrade visitor and animal facilities.
Mayor Wahab stressed that safeguarding the rights of wildlife is a fundamental responsibility, instructing officials to take all necessary measures to enhance living conditions for the animals and guarantee their protection.
In addition to structural changes, the Mayor directed the launch of an organic farming programme and a substantial plantation drive within the zoo. These initiatives are designed to promote environmentally conscious practices and offer patrons a clean, green leisure space.
The meeting also resolved to bolster security and maintain high standards of cleanliness across all municipal parks. The Mayor underscored that providing a safe and pleasant environment for citizens, particularly families and children, is a top priority and that no negligence in this regard would be tolerated.
Municipal Commissioner KMC Sumaira Hussain, Financial Advisor Gulzar Abro, and Senior Director Recreation Akhlaq Ahmed Yousufzai were among the senior officials present. The Mayor acknowledged recent enhancements at both locations but affirmed that efforts would persist to deliver superior public amenities.
