During the Sohail University National Tennis Championship at Modern Club Karachi, a special wheelchair tennis singles competition for men was held, which is an important step for this sport in Pakistan.
Eleven players participated, demonstrating the growing interest and support for wheelchair tennis across the country. The competition culminated in an exciting final where Pakistan Navy’s Fida Hussain defeated Sajjad Khan with a score of 2-6 to claim victory. Fida Hussain, known for his skill, has represented Pakistan in numerous international competitions, including the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China.
The event was presided over by Mr. Zainul Abidin, President of the Welfare Association for Persons with Disabilities, who participated as the chief guest. Despite his disability, Mr. Zainul Abidin is dedicated to disability sports and holds positions as Vice President of Karachi Tennis Association and Kemari District Tennis Association.
Muhammad Khalid Rehmani, a prominent figure in the Asian Tennis Federation’s Wheelchair Tennis Committee and Vice President of Pakistan Tennis Federation, emphasized the Federation’s commitment to promoting wheelchair tennis in Pakistan. He stressed the need for more competitive platforms that allow disabled athletes to showcase their talents.
The National Paralympic Committee Pakistan, International Tennis Federation, Pakistan Tennis Federation, and the Sports Department of the Government of Sindh are playing a vital role in supporting players like Fida Hussain, ensuring they have opportunities to compete at the international level.
