A large number of citizens, enraged by the severely deteriorating local law and order situation, suspended traffic by staging a sit-in on the Indus Highway on Thursday.
The demonstration, in which women and children also participated, was held on the appeal of civil society to protest against the continuous increase in criminal incidents. The protest was led by social figures Aijaz Tunio, Sarang Tunio, and Ziauddin Mugheri.
Speaking to the media, Aijaz Tunio, a recent victim of theft, said he was robbed on three different occasions. In the latest incident, a motorcycle and two mobile phones were snatched from him. He alleged that the lack of effective action by the police forced him to protest on the highway with his family.
Mr. Tunio, on behalf of the protestors, demanded the immediate recovery of the stolen items and strict legal action against the culprits involved in the crime.
The road was finally opened after the Station House Officer (SHO) of Nasirabad Police Station arrived at the scene and negotiated with the citizens. The protestors dispersed peacefully on the assurance by the SHO to recover the snatched motorcycle and mobile phones by evening.
