Authorities Target Illegal Vehicles Causing Billions in National Losses

A coordinated crackdown on non-customs-paid vehicles is underway as authorities revealed these illicit automobiles are causing annual losses of billions of rupees to the national exchequer and are frequently instrumental in smuggling and other criminal enterprises.

According to an official report today, the intensified effort was highlighted on Thursday during a ceremony where the Balochistan Police transferred 24 seized vehicles, valued at Rs 8 crore, to customs officials. The event, held at the Central Police Office, underscored the growing collaboration between law enforcement agencies to tackle the pervasive issue.

Inspector General of Police Balochistan, Muhammad Tahir, stated that his force is working in unison with all security agencies to combat not only terrorism but also smuggling, narcotics, and general crime. He confirmed an ongoing campaign targets the use and sale of these illegal vehicles, with joint police and customs operations being implemented on internal routes to restrict their movement.

The IG noted that such vehicles are often implicated in unlawful activities, creating significant legal challenges for police and excise departments due to a complete lack of official records.

Addressing the gathering, Collector Customs Balochistan, Dr Karam Elahi, commended the police for their practical cooperation. He reiterated that smuggled vehicles are a primary tool for illegal trade and directly contribute to the massive financial deficit. Dr Elahi confirmed that Pakistan Customs has initiated a crackdown under a joint action plan with Balochistan Police, warning that legal action is being pursued against individuals who use, purchase, or sell these vehicles.

Later at the police line, DIG Quetta Imran Shaukat formally handed over the 24 vehicles to Collector Elahi. DIG Shaukat explained that the automobiles were impounded during a recent Quetta Police operation and were transferred to customs authorities after all legal requirements were fulfilled.
