Pakistan Envoy in Chicago visits Illinois Assembly

The Illinois Senate has issued a formal proclamation designating March 23, 2026, as Pakistan Day throughout the state, a significant development emerging from a diplomatic visit to the state capital by Pakistan’s Consul General in Chicago, Zaman Mehdi.

According to a report by MOIB today, the official declaration was presented to the envoy during his meeting with the President of the Illinois Senate, Don Harmon. Senator Laura Murphy was also in attendance for the occasion.

Mr Mehdi’s visit to the Illinois General Assembly in Springfield included high-level discussions with members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The talks centred on fortifying Pak-US relations, acknowledging the contributions of the Pakistani-American diaspora, and exploring new avenues for collaboration between Pakistan and the State of Illinois.

During his time at the state legislature, the Consul General also engaged with several other key lawmakers. He held brief interactions with State Senators Rachel Ventura, Karina Villa, Laura Ellman, and Laura Fine, and conducted meetings with State Representatives La Shawn Ford, Justin Cochran, Daniel Didech, Nabeela Syed, and Maura Hirschauer.

The diplomatic engagement is seen as a reflection of the growing visibility and civic input of the Pakistani-American community in Illinois. It also served to reaffirm a mutual commitment towards enhancing bilateral engagement, fostering greater understanding, and building a more robust partnership between Pakistan and the United States.
