In a significant step towards improving recreational facilities and promoting animal welfare in the metropolitan city, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has initiated an extensive uplift and modernization plan for Karachi Zoo, Safari Park, and Landhi Korangi Zoo with an estimated cost of Rs160 million.
The initiative has been launched on the special directives of Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, who has directed the concerned departments to transform the city’s zoological and recreational facilities into modern, environmentally sustainable, and family-friendly spaces in line with international standards, according to KMC information today.
Under the comprehensive development plan, multiple improvement projects are being executed simultaneously, including the upgradation of Karachi Zoo and Safari Park, improvement of Landhi Korangi Zoo facilities, conversion to solar energy and enhancement of the boating zone at Safari Park. The projects also include beautification measures, infrastructure rehabilitation, improvement of animal enclosures, visitor facilitation upgrades, and strengthening of overall safety and environmental standards.
Chairing a high-level meeting with Municipal Commissioner KMC Abrar Jaffer, Senior KMC officials, and zoo administration authorities, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab emphasized that the city’s zoos and recreational parks must be transformed into safe, healthy, and educational environments for both citizens and animals.
Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Karachi stated that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation is committed to restoring the historic and recreational importance of the city’s zoological facilities through sustainable development and modern management practices.
‘We are not only improving recreational spaces for the people of Karachi, but we are also ensuring better living conditions, safety, and welfare standards for animals. Animals deserve care, protection, and dignified treatment just like human beings, and their welfare remains one of our top priorities,’ the mayor said.
He further added that the installation of solar energy systems at Landhi Korangi Zoo reflected KMC’s commitment towards environmentally friendly and energy-efficient solutions. The initiative is expected to reduce operational costs while promoting sustainable urban management practices.
He directed the relevant engineering and parks departments to ensure timely completion of all ongoing schemes and maintain high construction and welfare standards throughout the execution process. He said the revamp projects would significantly improve public engagement, tourism, educational visits, and family recreation opportunities across Karachi.
Officials briefed the meeting that the upgraded boating zone at Safari Park would include improved infrastructure, safety measures, and enhanced visitor facilities aimed at attracting more families and tourists. Similarly, new development works at Karachi Zoo and Landhi Korangi Zoo would focus on improving animal habitats, cleanliness, landscaping, lighting, pathways, and visitor comfort.
