Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its enduring ties with the United States, calling the alliance a key element of Pakistan’s foreign policy. The commitment came after a meeting with US Consul General Stetson Sanders in Lahore today, during which the two sides discussed bilateral ties, trade, investment and regional peace.
During the discussions, Mr. Gilani commended the trust placed in Pakistan by President Donald Trump and his administration, particularly in the nation”s role in facilitating regional diplomacy. He highlighted Pakistan”s hosting of the historic Islamabad Talks, which enabled direct dialogue between the U.S. and Iran, thus reinforcing Pakistan”s responsibility in promoting peace and stability.
Mr. Gilani stressed the importance of expanding bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including trade, information technology, energy, minerals, health, education, and agriculture. He noted that the United States remains a crucial economic partner and the primary market for Pakistani exports. The successful negotiation of the U.S.-Pakistan Agreement on Reciprocal Trade was also acknowledged, alongside an invitation for increased American investment in Pakistan”s key sectors.
The Chairman Senate also recognised the U.S. as a significant investor in Pakistan, contributing to employment and economic growth. Additionally, he appreciated the role of the U.S. administration in helping to mediate a ceasefire between Pakistan and India following last year”s military tension.
Expressing concerns over India”s actions regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, Mr. Gilani urged the international community to ensure adherence to treaty obligations and international law, highlighting the potential threat to regional stability and the livelihoods of millions in Pakistan.
Emphasising the importance of parliamentary diplomacy, Mr. Gilani called for enhanced exchanges between legislators of both nations and praised the contributions of the Pakistani diaspora in the U.S. as well as students studying in American universities.
Concluding the meeting, Mr. Gilani expressed optimism about the continued growth of Pakistan-U.S. relations, benefiting both nations and their citizens.
