The Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PCMEA) has expressed serious concerns over the continued delay in government funding for the 42nd International Handloom Carpet Exhibition to be held in Lahore this October. The association has expressed concern that the delay could jeopardize an important event for boosting exports and earning foreign exchange.
In a joint statement, PCMEA leaders Chairman Mian Atiqur Rehman and Patron-in-Chief Abdul Latif Malik today highlighted that with just three months left for the exhibition, significant government support has yet to be received. This uncertainty has stalled preparations, leaving manufacturers and exporters concerned about whether the event can be held on time.
The exhibition, regarded as the industry”s premier marketing platform, has historically enabled Pakistani exporters to land export orders worth millions and showcase their handmade carpets to global buyers. The association stressed the importance of the exhibition in maintaining Pakistan”s footprint in international markets and supporting an industry that significantly contributes to the country”s economy.
Without the necessary funds, organisers have been unable to engage with regular overseas buyers or offer essential hospitality packages, delaying key promotional activities typically initiated months before the event.
International buyers who have participated in past exhibitions are seeking confirmation regarding this year”s event, but the ongoing uncertainty prevents organisers from providing assurances, potentially undermining Pakistan”s credibility with international business partners.
Adding to the urgency, the association noted that Pakistan”s traditional competitor in the handmade carpet industry hosts a similar event concurrently. Many foreign buyers coordinate their trips to attend both exhibitions. However, the uncertainty surrounding Pakistan”s event has led to hesitancy among buyers to finalise travel plans, raising concerns about reduced international participation.
Calling the exhibition the “lifeline” of the handmade carpet industry, the association has appealed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, and other key officials to immediately address the issue.
The association has urged the government to release the necessary funds without further delay, asserting that the successful organisation of the event is vital for the handmade carpet industry”s survival, promoting exports, attracting global buyers, generating foreign exchange, and enhancing Pakistan”s reputation in the international market.
