KMC Launches Stormwater Drains’ Cleaning Drive Amid Mosoon Alert

In a proactive move to strengthen the city’s preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) today launched a comprehensive nallah-cleaning drive across all districts of Karachi.

The initiative aims to improve the flow of rainwater, minimize the risk of urban flooding, and ensure the timely drainage of stormwater during heavy rainfall.

KMC is responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of 45 major stormwater drains (nallahs) across the city. The extensive operation is being carried out under a well-defined schedule to ensure that all major drainage channels are cleared of silt, debris, solid waste, and other obstructions before the onset of the monsoon season.

To review the progress of the campaign, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab visited several locations, including the Hijrat Colony Nallah, one of the city’s key drainage channels that carries rainwater from several densely populated areas. He was accompanied by Municipal Commissioner Abrar Jaffar and the Senior Director of Municipal Services.

During the visit, the Senior Director of Municipal Services briefed the Mayor on the ongoing cleaning operations, the work schedule, machinery deployment, and the overall strategy adopted to complete the exercise before the arrival of the monsoon rains.

The Mayor Karachi directed the Municipal Services Department to make the nallah-cleaning schedule publicly available through KMC’s official website and social media platforms so that citizens remain informed about the progress of the operation and the areas being covered.

Speaking on the occasion, Wahab said that the objective was to complete the cleaning of all major drains well before the monsoon season so that rainwater could flow smoothly and the risk of urban flooding could be significantly reduced. He said that KMC teams had performed exceptionally well last year and that the city was even better prepared this year with a comprehensive plan, improved coordination, and a clear execution schedule.

The mayor appealed to citizens to play their part in keeping Karachi clean by disposing of garbage only at designated collection points and refraining from dumping waste into drains and stormwater channels.

He said that the success of the campaign depended not only on the government’s efforts but also on public cooperation. He urged every citizen to help keep Karachi clean by avoiding the disposal of garbage into nallahs, adding that collective efforts would help protect the city from avoidable flooding and environmental hazards.

The mayor further emphasized that the KMC administration was committed to taking preventive measures rather than responding after emergencies occurred. He said that KMC believed in preparedness rather than waiting for disasters to strike. He added that its teams were working round the clock to complete the operation on time, address public grievances promptly, and ensure that Karachi remained resilient during the monsoon season.

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public infrastructure, protecting residential and commercial areas from flooding, and providing efficient municipal services through timely planning and coordinated action.
