Pakistan must emerge as a confident maritime power by moving beyond its traditional land-based thinking: Former President of Azad Kashmir

Former President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Masood Khan today urged Pakistan to shift focus from a land-centric perspective and strive to become a strong maritime power. Speaking at a seminar organized by the Center for Law and Security and the National Institute of Maritime Affairs today, Khan highlighted the evolving opportunities in the geopolitical environment of the Gulf region and encouraged Pakistan to capitalize on them.

In a statement today, Khan said that during the recent Gulf crisis, Pakistan’s diplomatic skills have enhanced its strategic influence. He encouraged leveraging this new credibility to play an active role in shaping maritime security in the Gulf and Indian Ocean, rejecting the notion of viewing Pakistan as merely a passive observer.

Acknowledging Pakistan’s naval strength, Khan noted that during times of tension, Pakistani naval ships took secure routes, portraying it as a reliable security partner. He cited the growing defense cooperation relations with the Gulf countries as evidence of Pakistan’s strategic significance.

Khan praised the expertise of the Pakistan Navy, whose leadership in significant joint naval forces operations demonstrated its capability to combat maritime piracy and drug smuggling, further strengthening Pakistan’s international standing.

He also highlighted Pakistan’s growing role in connecting with Western Asia, Europe, and other regions through successful trade routes via Karachi, Port Qasim, and Gwadar. This connectivity presents Pakistan as a key trade gateway.

Khan warned of potential consequences if any restrictions are imposed around the Strait of Hormuz and emphasized the importance of global cooperation and adherence to international maritime laws.

Concluding his address, Khan appealed for investment in the blue economy and maritime infrastructure, advocating a strategic approach to maximize the use of Pakistan’s vast coastal areas and exclusive economic zone.

The seminar was attended by prominent figures, including senior Navy officers and strategic experts, who discussed the region’s maritime challenges and Pakistan’s increasing role in maritime stability and connectivity.
