Karachi’s municipal administration has activated a citywide monsoon emergency response plan, placing all relevant civic institutions on high alert as authorities prepare for anticipated heavy rainfall during the ongoing monsoon season.
According to KMC information, Karamullah Waqasi, spokesperson for Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab and parliamentary leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), said comprehensive arrangements had been finalized to address rain-related emergencies and maintain uninterrupted municipal services across the metropolis.
Speaking at a meeting attended by Union Council representatives from Baldia Town and Keamari Town, as well as officials of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB), Waqasi stated that a coordinated operational framework was being implemented to reduce disruptions for residents during expected downpours.
He said sanitation measures, prompt collection and disposal of waste, round-the-clock surveillance of storm-water drains, and efficient drainage management had been identified as key priorities under the emergency preparedness plan.
Waqasi added that the monsoon contingency strategy was being executed simultaneously with ongoing development and civic uplift projects across Karachi under the direction of Mayor Murtaza Wahab. He noted that all departments concerned had been instructed to remain fully operational throughout the rainy season.
He said the monsoon had already affected several parts of Pakistan, prompting city authorities to devise a dedicated preparedness mechanism for Karachi to ensure public safety and facilitate a rapid response to any emergency situation.
According to Waqasi, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has also been placed on alert, while officers and field staff have been directed to discharge their duties diligently during periods of intense rainfall.
He said low-lying and vulnerable localities had been mapped in advance, with additional personnel, jetting and suction equipment, and other resources earmarked for deployment to tackle urban flooding and drainage-related challenges.
Waqasi further stated that elected local government representatives were actively engaged in their respective jurisdictions and remained in close coordination with municipal departments to address residents’ complaints without delay.
Urging citizens to cooperate with civic authorities, he advised residents to observe safety measures during heavy rains, refrain from removing sewer lids and manhole covers, and immediately report emergencies to the relevant agencies.
He reiterated that the PPP-led municipal administration remained committed to making Karachi cleaner, safer, and more modern, adding that every available resource would be utilized to ensure public convenience and the uninterrupted delivery of essential civic services during the monsoon season.
