Islamabad, March 08, 2019 (PPI-OT): Additional Chief Secretary (Home) to Government of Punjab, Home Department has passed the order for the whole province of Punjab that no cotton crop is to be sown in the month of February and March 2019. He also directed that the cotton crop sown before 01.04.2019 will be ploughed up/uprooted. He noted that sowing of cotton crop before April, provides early feed to the Pink Bollworm, the most threatening insect pest of cotton. He added that such early crops became hatcheries for the insects pests which severally damage the whole cotton crop of the season.
In his order, Addl. Chief Secretary (Home) has asserted that it has become necessary and expedient to make this order to prevent the early sowing of cotton as a precautionary measure to save the cotton crop from sustaining damage from Pink Bollworm. He also stated that if not circumvented now, it will not only significantly threaten the cotton production of the country but will also adversely affect the human health and environment due to excessive use of pesticides against the crop damaging insects/worms which will further lead to health issues in the population.
