Anti-Locust operations by NLCC is exemplary: Syed Fakhar Imam

Islamabad, October 02, 2020 (PPI-OT): Anti-Locust operations by NLCC is exemplary. Threat from Somalia has subsided. This was stated by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research (NFSR), Syed Fakhar Imam while chairing the meeting of National Locusts Control Centre (NLCC) on Friday. Lieutenant General Moazzam Ejaz, Coordinator NLCC also co-chaired the meeting.

In last 7 days 12,514 sq km have been surveyed. Control operation is being done at 6sq km in last week Dr. Mubarak, from FAO briefed about locust forecast. He said that FAO is quoting anti-locust operation in Pakistan as ideal. As per the forecast, in Southwest Asia, the situation continues to improve as the seasonal monsoon withdraws from the summer breeding areas along both sides of the Indo-Pakistan border.

Control operations continue in Pakistan against small infestations that persist Pakistan Meteorological Department informed that continental air is prevailing over most parts of the country. Hot and dry weather is likely to prevail over most parts of the country. Sindh reported recently locust was found in Jamshoro but it was controlled effectively.

KPK, Balochistan and Punjab said that no locust is reported in the province. However anti-locust survey and control operations are in progress. In Last 24 hrs 183740 hectares area has been surveyed. In last 24 hrs Locust control operation has been carried out on 310 hectares of Jamshoro while con ops is in progress at Rahim Yar Khan. In last 6 months, control operation has been carried out on 1132530 hectares area of land.
