Arrest Warrant For Opposition Leader Cancelled; PTI Workers Sentenced

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad revoked the arrest warrant for Omar Ayub Khan, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, related to a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) demonstration in October 2024. Earlier, ATC Judge Tahir Abbas Supra issued a bailable warrant for Khan. The warrant was later withdrawn after his lawyer presented an exemption request to the court. The lawsuit, filed at the Shahzad Town Police Station, stems from confrontations between PTI backers and law enforcement on October 4, 2024.

The court also excused PTI Senator Azam Khan Swati from appearing, accepting a request filed the previous day. The hearing was postponed until July 30.

In other developments, a local court delivered judgments in two demonstration-related lawsuits filed under the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act. Judicial Magistrates Ahmed Shehzad Gondal and Mureed Abbas declared that twelve PTI members received six-month prison terms for participating in the November 26 protest, while one member was cleared of charges.
