Bread-earner son jailed in false case, family in distress

Srinagar, September 14, 2018 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, Umar Farooq of Kowsibagh village in Pulwama was arrested on February 26, 2018 in a false case of weapon snatching and has been in jail ever since. His mother, Begum, in a media interview said on the day Umar, as usual, was ferrying passengers from his village to main town Pulwama when some unidentified gun wielding men intercepted him outside the degree college, Pulwama.

She said that her son, unaware of what was happening, panicked and drove away from the place as soon as he heard some gunshots. “He came home straightaway and narrated whatever had happened,” she added. The family thought “speaking truth will save Umar” and handed him over to police the same evening at nearby Kakapora police station.

His father, Farooq Ahmad Mir, on the occasion said police booked him and was shifted to Central Jail, Srinagar. The case is sub judice now. “We thought he will be released because he was innocent. But I guess expecting justice was a mistake,” he added. Police seized a vehicle of Umar but the bank does not have a consideration for such cases and the family has been paying Rs 6,500 per month-to repay the car loan.
