Kashmiris to observe Black Day on Friday

Srinagar, January 24, 2018 (PPI-OT):Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and across the world will observe the Indian Republic Day, on Friday, as Black Day to remind the world community that India continues to deny the people of Kashmir their inalienable right to self-determination.

Call for the observance of the day has been given by the Joint Resistance Leadership comprising, Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik. The day will be marked with a complete strike in occupied Kashmir and anti-India demonstrations and rallies in world capitals. The leaders in a joint statement in Srinagar, today, said, India has no right to celebrate its Republic Day as it is occupying Jammu and Kashmir with its military might.

Indian troops and police personnel have been deployed in strength in Srinagar and other towns ahead of the Indian Republic Day. Random crackdowns are being carried out and commuters are subjected to vigorous screening. Police have erected barricades in different areas of Baramulla and on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway frisking every passerby and vehicle before being allowed to move ahead.

Complete Shutdown will be observed in Handwara area of Kupwara district, tomorrow, to mark the anniversary of January 1990 massacre, perpetrated by Indian army and paramilitary forces. Dozens of Kashmiris were killed when the troops opened fire on protesters on the 25th January in 1990 in Handwara. The carnage took place soon after Jagmohan Malhotra took charge as governor of the occupied territory.

The Chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Gilani in a statement in Srinagar criticized the puppet administration for its callous approach towards the rape and murder of a minor girl, Aasifa, in Kathua district. He said the incident has shaken the collective conscience of the Kashmiri people.

Hundreds of people hailing from Gujjar-Bakerwal community assembled outside the deputy commissioner’s office in Islamabad town and demanded the arrest of culprits behind the rape and murder of the Kathua girl. A delegation of Jammu and Muslim Conference led by its President, Muhammad Sultan Magray, joined a demonstration at press colony in Srinagar to demand justice for the victim girl.

Indian troops went berserk during a crackdown operation in Lassipora area of Pulwama district and subjected everyone who came in their way to ruthless beating. The troops did not spare even a local headman and a preacher.

The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front has condemned the extension to judicial remand of party Chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik, till 27th of this month. Yasin Malik was arrested on Friday and was lodged at Srinagar Central Jail.

In Washington, the World Kashmir Awareness Forum Secretary General, Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai in a statement expressed gratitude to the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, for encouraging Pakistan and India to address the Kashmir dispute politically. He said, the Kashmiris still believe that the UN Secretary General will mediate between the parties concerned.

India has no right to celebrate its Republic Day in IOK: JRL

Srinagar, January 24, 2018 (PPI-OT):In occupied Kashmir, the Joint Resistance Leadership has said that India has no right to celebrate its Republican day as they have occupied Jammu and Kashmir with its military might and its presence has tormented all ethics.

The leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik in a joint statement in Srinagar today appealed to Kashmiri people to observe 26th January as a Black Day and boycott all celebrations. The leaders asserted that India claims to be a large democracy in the world but virtually stands exposed in Jammu and Kashmir and as it is trampling all basic and fundamental rights since the past seven decades.

Following is the text of the statement: Referring to human rights abuses in Jammu and Kashmir, the JRL said that abuses range from mass killings, enforced disappearances, torture, rape and sexual abuse to political repression and suppression of freedom of speech and added that six lakh people were killed, ten thousand disappeared in forces custody and hundreds of women molested. We have no animosity with India or its people and they have every right to celebrate republican day within its states but despite their being rhetoric about democracy they have no ethical or constitutional right to celebrate this in Jammu and Kashmir as our democratic rights have been smashed and trampled.

The joint leadership while referring to UN charter said that they guarantee the basic and fundamental rights and this institution has obviously called to seek the people’s verdict through plebiscite and has asked to ascertain their wish with regards to political destiny of state and even India in its pledge has confirmed to honour and seek the people’s verdict through plebiscite. Despite being signatory to these resolutions, India backtracked from its commitment, said JRL and is not providing this opportunity to people of state.

We oppose all these celebrations, leadership said and added the main reason is their deceit and mockery with democracy. Pro-freedom leaders stressed, school going children, their parents and teachers to stay away from all these celebrations and asked to realize their obligations towards nation. Joint leadership expressed their anguish over the reports of preparation by a few institutions for republican day and asked to refrain from this and said that it will have serious implication over our freedom movement.

Meanwhile, the joint leadership has reaffirmed appeal for complete shutdown of 25th and 27th January in Handwara and Kupwara towns respectively to pay homage and tributes to the martyrs of 25 January 1990 Handwara and 27 January 1994 Kupwara massacres. They further appealed for a thorough and impartial probe of all these unfortunate incidents of mass killings by world human rights bodies.

USAID Creates Pathways to Success for Young Women

Islamabad, January 23, 2018 (PPI-OT):The U.S. Government demonstrated its commitment to increasing opportunities for Pakistani women during a panel discussion focused on education, economic participation, and gender equality. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Acting Deputy Mission Director Christopher Steel spoke to more than 100 participants from academia, public, private, and non-profit sectors at a program sponsored by the USAID-supported Training for Pakistan activity.

“We all should realize that for a woman to advance, it is critical that she is given the opportunity to learn. It is equally important that the ecosystem in which she operates empowers her to achieve whatever form of success she has defined for herself,” Mr. Steel said. “Through the Pathways to Success Program, USAID is assisting Pakistani women and girls in acquiring marketable skills, preparing them for the workplace, and encouraging them to explore employment opportunities and entrepreneurial endeavours. By improving opportunities for adolescent girls to access the knowledge and the technical skills they need, we empower them to make better lives for themselves, their families, their communities, and their country.”

The discussion was moderated by Ms. Moneeza Hashmi, Mentoring Coordinator for the USAID-supported Pathways to Success National Mentoring Program. Panellists for the first session included beneficiaries of the program along with their parents. More than 30 high-achieving and prominent women from IT, business, law, micro finance, banking, academia, arts, sports, and media have volunteered their participation in a national mentor network for 300 girls under the USAID-supported mentorship program. The mentors meet with their adolescent mentees and families at least twice a month to provide them guidance on how to overcome challenges and paving the way for professional success.

The USAID Training for Pakistan activity is a multi-year initiative aimed at providing participant training in the areas of education, energy, economic growth and agriculture, health, and stabilization and governance. The activity utilizes a broad range of participant training resources, contributing to the capacity development of USAID partners in line with the development objectives of the Government of Pakistan.
