Charge-sheet filed against Kanhaiya Kumar, Kashmiri students

New Delhi, January 14, 2019 (PPI-OT): Delhi Police on Monday filed a charge-sheet against former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) President Kanhaiya Kumar and nine others including Kashmiri students in a sedition case. The charge-sheet filed before Metropolitan Magistrate Sumeet Anand also names former student activists Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya.

“The others charged in the case are Kashmiri students Aquib Hussain, Mujeeb Hussain, Muneeb Hussain, Umar Gul, Rayeea Rassol, Bashir Butt and Basharat,” a media report said.

As many as 36 others, including Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D Raja’s daughter Aprajita, Shehla Rashid (then vice-president of the JNUSU), Rama Naga, Ashutosh Kumar and Banojyotsna Lahiri have been named in column 12 of the charge sheet due to insufficient evidence against them, the report further said.

“The matter has been listed for further hearing on Wednesday,” the report added. It is worth mentioning here that the students are charged with shouting pro-Kashmir freedom slogans during a university function in February 2016.
