(City): Five drown as Indus floods hundreds of villages in Sindh

Karachi:Six people drowned Thursday as Indus River flooded hundreds of villages from Kashmore to Dadu region in Sindh.

The river is at medium flood, damaging crops and forcing people to shift to safer areas. The river’s upper flow at Guddu Barrage is 569,570 cusecs while its Sukkur Barrage upper flow is 489,235. The upper Kotri Barrage flow is 212,563 cusecs.

A man, Ghulam Nabi Sandurani, and his son Barkat Sandurani drowned in Indus River flood at Sarhad area of Ghotki when they were shifting to safe area.

In another incident, a woman was drowned in flooded katcha area near Pano Aqil. The villagers were searching for her. Many katch area village have been unindated in Pano Aqil taluka.

Separately, two girls drowned in boat capsizing in flood water near Pirjo Goth. Luckily, 28 other people were saved by villagers. The residents of village Morr Jhabar Shaikh, including women and children, were shifting on a boat to safe area along protective dyke when their boat capsized. As a result, two girls Laila and Sindh Shaikh drowned.

The river has flooded hundreds of villages in Kashmore, Sukkur, Sukkur, Khairpur and Larkana districts of Sindh. Hundreds of families have evacuated themselves while thousands are still stranded and surrounded by the gushing flood water. The flood situation is critical in these districts as residents are facing huge crop losses. The authorities need to evacuate people with immediate effect so as to save lives of people.

There is also need to provide them food and other relief items to meet emergency situation. All concerned departments have been put on alert in Sindh to monitor flood levels. The irrigation authorities have issued flood warning at Guddu directing nearby villages to move to the safer places.
