Climate Action – Karachi Mayor Unveils Historic 2.1 Million Climate-Resilient Homes Project

Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab today announced a historic initiative to construct 2.1 million climate-resilient homes for victims of the devastating 2022 floods, presenting the massive undertaking as a cornerstone of Pakistan”s climate strategy at the International Mayors Forum 2025 in Japan.

Addressing global leaders in Toyota City, Mayor Wahab detailed the Sindh Government”s monumental project, noting that 1.2 million of these specially designed houses have already been completed. The forum brought together mayors from across the globe to share strategies on environmental challenges, sustainable development, and modern urban planning.

The Mayor explained that the construction of homes for those displaced by the floods is not merely a rehabilitation effort but a guarantee of a sustainable and secure future for vulnerable communities. He emphasized that Sindh is confronting climate challenges through modern policies and practical measures.

In his address, Wahab highlighted that a comprehensive strategy has been adopted in collaboration with the Sindh Government to lessen the impacts of climate change and achieve sustainability goals, with positive outcomes beginning to materialize.

Global leaders participating in the forum focused their discussions on climate resilience, the promotion of green infrastructure in city planning, and the efficient utilization of energy resources. Mayor Wahab”s presentation of the housing project was a key example of such measures in action.

He conveyed that Pakistan”s active participation on the international stage demonstrates the nation”s seriousness in tackling climate-related issues.
