Climate minister announces nationwide tree planting campaign for August

Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr Musadik Malik, highlighted the crucial link between climate action and justice as the chief guest at a tree planting event organized by the Ethiopian Embassy.

The drive, spearheaded by Ethiopian Ambassador Dr Jemal Beker Abdula, is part of Ethiopia”s ambitious Green Legacy Programme, which aims to plant 700 million trees in Pakistan and Ethiopia to rehabilitate ecosystems and curb carbon emissions.

Ambassador Abdula outlined the Green Legacy Initiative”s impact on Ethiopia”s environmental restoration and greenhouse gas reduction efforts. He assured Pakistan of continued support in combating climate change and extended an invitation to Dr. Malik for the upcoming Africa Climate Summit in Ethiopia in September 2025.

Dr Malik stressed that environmental harm constitutes an injustice, with nature eventually responding in kind. He called for urgent corrective actions to prevent irreversible ecological damage. The minister also emphasized the intergenerational consequences of environmental degradation, warning that it jeopardizes the future of children by depriving them of experiences like observing fireflies or starlit nights.

Dr Malik announced a nationwide tree planting campaign for August, offering free saplings to the public to bolster ecological restoration and climate resilience. He lauded Ethiopia”s Green Legacy Initiative as an example of steadfast environmental stewardship and a source of valuable insights for Pakistan.

Both nations reiterated their commitment to environmental rehabilitation, extensive afforestation, and joint climate action to ensure a sustainable and just future.
