The Islamabad High Court (IHC) mandated the immediate dismissal of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) head Major General (retd) Hafeez ur Rehman on Tuesday, deeming his appointment unlawful. Justice Babar Sattar delivered a comprehensive 99-page ruling, stating that Rehman’s selection violated legal protocols. The court directed his prompt removal from office.

The verdict also stipulated that the most senior PTA member should serve as acting chief until a permanent successor is named.

Rehman’s appointment had faced legal challenges alleging procedural irregularities. Plaintiffs contended that his selection circumvented established legal frameworks and prerequisites. The IHC validated these concerns, emphasizing the need for transparent and legal appointments within regulatory agencies.

This decision is anticipated to have substantial repercussions for the telecom regulatory organization, especially as the industry navigates issues concerning online oversight, internet administration, and information confidentiality.
