Authorities have incinerated a colossal quantity of more than 700 metric tons of illicit and hazardous goods, including carcinogenic betel nuts and gutka, in a decisive move to protect citizens from significant health risks, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The large-scale disposal operation, carried out by the Collectorate of Customs Enforcement, Gadani, at FEU Khurkhera, involved a vast haul of contraband deemed unfit for human consumption or illegal under import regulations.
The disposed items included a staggering 614.6 metric tons of betel nuts, 85.7 metric tons of gutka and supari, 21,261 outers of foreign-origin cigarettes, and 21.25 metric tons of China salt.
Customs authorities emphasized that the destruction of these harmful products demonstrates the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) unwavering commitment to preventing smuggled or dangerous merchandise from entering local markets and posing a threat to the community.
The entire process was executed with full transparency and in strict accordance with all legal and procedural requirements.
To ensure oversight, the incineration ceremony was witnessed by a wide array of officials, including officers from Customs Enforcement Gadani, the Deputy Commissioner and DPO Hub, a Judicial Magistrate, and representatives from the Environment Department.
Representatives from Pakistan Tobacco Company, Philip Morris, and officials from various law enforcement and intelligence agencies were also present to observe the proceedings.
The FBR reiterated its determination to intensify its anti-smuggling measures, enforce regulatory controls rigorously, and protect the health and safety of citizens through sustained enforcement actions across the country.
