Cyclone Biparjoy: NDMA urges people to stay away from coastal areas

Islamabad, June 11, 2023 (PPI-OT): The National Disaster Management Authority has urged the people to stay away from coastal areas as the Cyclone Biparjoy is likely to intensify in the next 24 hours. The NDMA, in a series of tweets on Sunday, said the cyclone may impact the southern and south-eastern parts of Sindh by Tuesday. It warned that cyclones may cause strong winds, torrential rains, and floods in coastal areas.

The NDMA further advised the authorities concerned to launch an awareness campaign in local language to keep the people abreast of the evolving situation in the wake of the cyclone. It advised the general public to remain aware of the weather conditions and avoid going to the beach whereas. The NDMA also called on people to follow local authorities’ guidance in any emergency situation.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department advised fishermen not to venture in open sea till the system is over by Saturday, as the Arabian Sea conditions may get very rough and high accompanied with high tides along the coast. According to the PMD, the Very Severe Cyclonic Storm “BIPARJOY” over east-central Arabian Sea has further intensified into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm, moved northward during last 12 hours and now lies at a distance of about 760 km south of Karachi, 740 km south of Thatta and 840 km southeast of Ormara.
