The Government of Balochistan has announced a comprehensive plan to develop an urban forest on 63 acres on Saryab Road. This is a landmark initiative designed to combat rising pollution and summer heat, while also generating government revenue through an adjacent commercial and residential complex.
This major project was reviewed at a meeting chaired by Balochistan Chief Secretary, Shakeel Qadir Khan, on Wednesday, where plans to promote forestry in urban areas were discussed.
The primary objective of this initiative is to enhance the urban ecosystem by planting thousands of trees, creating a publicly accessible green space that integrates natural flora with existing urban infrastructure. This integration will help control pollution and regulate temperatures during hot weather.
Highlighting the environmental benefits of the project, the Chief Secretary noted the positive impact on carbon credits. He stated, “By increasing the number of trees, they absorb carbon dioxide, which reduces greenhouse gases.”
During the meeting, the Chief Secretary also issued a directive to plant trees along roadsides to further expand the green cover.
Officials were informed that the project will also include a mixed-use commercial and residential area. This adjacent complex will feature a hospital, a school, parking facilities, and a shopping mall, creating a new revenue stream for the government.
The high-level meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary (Development) Zahid Saleem, Secretary Forests Abdul Fateh Bhangar, Secretary UP and D Ishaq Jamali, Secretary PHE Hashim Ghilzai, Secretary Environment Ali Akbar Baloch, Commissioner Quetta Shahzaib Kakar, and Director General QDA Aurangzeb Kasi, among other senior officials.
