Demo in Awantipora against teacher’s custodial killing

Srinagar, March 21, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, a large number of people including the family members of school teacher, Rizwan Asad, staged a protest demonstration in Awantipora area of Pulwama district, today, against his custodial killing.

Rizwan Assad died in the custody of Indian’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) at infamous Cargo interrogation centre in Srinagar on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, days after he was picked up by the NIA from his home in Awantipora.

Chanting slogans ‘We want justice’ and ‘Rizwan ke qatilo ko pesh karo (present the killers of Rizwan) the protesters assembled at the highway near Gurdwara in Awantipora. The protesters, who were joined by the members of local Sikh community, demanded the exhumation of Rizwan’s body to “show the marks of torture on his body”.

Talking to reporters, the father and brother of Rizwan dismissed the reports suggesting that he had tried to escape from the custody.

“Rizwan was brutally tortured in the custody and that has led to his death,” said his elder brother.

Meanwhile, complete shutdown was observed in Awantipora on the second consecutive day, today, against the killing of Rizwan. All shops and business establishments were closed while transport was off the road in Awantipora and its adjoining areas.
