Dengue hemorrhagic fever leading cause of death among children: Report

QUETTA: World Health Organization (WHO) has issued dengue situation report of Balochistan, it emerged on Friday.

The report says dengue fever is a vector borne viral infection of global public health concern in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. The disease is caused by any of the four closely related dengue virus serotypes (DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4), which are transmitted primarily by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Dengue fever can manifest as a mild flu-like illness or develop into a severe, potentially life-threatening condition known as severe dengue or dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF).

Worldwide, 100-400 million dengue infections occur annually. Out of them, 70% cases occur in Asian countries including Pakistan. DHF is a leading cause of death among children. No specific treatment (only symptomatic treatment) is available. Early detection and hospitalization lowers fatality rates below 1%.

Dengue prevention and control depend on effective vector control measures. In Balochistan southern coastal belt districts (Kech, Gwadar, Lasbela and Hub) have established endemicity.
