Leading art scholars and academics have underscored the critical role of creative expression in challenging societal norms and fostering progressive thought, urging for its use as a catalyst for significant social and cultural transformation during a seminar at the University of Sargodha (UoS).
According to University of Sargodha information today, the discourse took place at a symposium titled ‘Social and Cultural Change through Art and Design,’ organized by the university’s Institute of Art and Design. The event was conceived to explore the profound influence of artistic endeavors in raising social awareness and steering cultural evolution.
Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas, the Vice-Chancellor of UoS and chief guest at the gathering, highlighted the importance of art and design in molding collective consciousness and encouraging inclusivity. He commended the institute for creating a platform where students and scholars could engage in meaningful discussions connecting creativity with societal advancement.
The seminar featured insights from distinguished speakers, including Prof. Qudus Mirza, a renowned art critic from Beaconhouse National University, Lahore, and Prof. Dr. Kanwal Khalid of the Punjab Higher Education Department. Both experts provided their perspectives on how artistic mediums can bridge cultural gaps and stimulate constructive change.
Prof. Mirza elaborated on the dynamic relationship between creative works and the community, noting how artistic expression has historically served to question established conventions and cultivate empathy. In her address, Prof. Khalid drew upon her experiences as an artist and educator, stressing the function of visual culture in tackling social problems and nurturing critical thinking among individuals.
The program also featured an interactive session, providing students and attendees with an opportunity to exchange viewpoints and engage directly with the guest speakers.
The successful event was held under the supervision of Maryam Saif, Director of the Institute of Art and Design, and was coordinated by lecturer Ms. Huma Sajjad.
