Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has characterized rapid population growth and climate vulnerability as dual “existential threats” that Pakistan must confront to realize its full potential and secure its long-term economic prospects.
Addressing a Population Council event in the capital, the minister assured that relevant ministries would receive the necessary support and assistance to deal with these pressing matters, according to a statement today.
He emphasized the critical need to integrate these challenges into mainstream policy, ensuring they are prioritized in budgetary planning and resource allocation for effective management.
Aurangzeb stated that while the nation”s economy is on a positive trajectory, moving from stabilization to growth, its sustained future depends on effectively confronting these two national challenges.
The finance minister also drew attention to the social consequences, pointing to the growing trend of rural-to-urban migration and the subsequent expansion of informal settlements.
He linked these urban areas, with their inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions, to poor nutritional outcomes and the perpetuation of child stunting.
In his concluding remarks, Aurangzeb encouraged further research on urban vulnerabilities so that national planning can address the full spectrum of demographic and climate-linked challenges facing the country.
