Former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s 47th death anniversary observed

Pakistan is observing the 47th death anniversary of its former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, an event that has assumed new significance following the Supreme Court’s historic opinion that his 1979 trial did not meet the standards of fairness and due process.

In a message to commemorate the day, the President of Pakistan highlighted the Supreme Court’s opinion from March 6, 2024

The presidential statement detailed the court’s findings, which pointed out the shortcomings of the strict procedural rules. The investigation into the murder case, which had been formally closed in 1976, was reopened “without legal authority” shortly after the military coup that overthrew Bhutto’s government on July 5, 1977.

Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the founder of the Pakistan People’s Party, is remembered as a central figure in the nation’s history. His leadership is credited with restoring national confidence after 1971 and establishing a new constitutional framework with the adoption of the 1973 Constitution, which is the foundation of Pakistan’s parliamentary democracy.

The president’s message also paid tribute to the struggle led by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and Begum Nusrat Bhutto.
