A significant controversy has emerged following a declaration by Additional Attorney General (AAG) Rashid Hafeez, who reportedly described Dr. Aafia Siddiqui as an American citizen, a claim that has been vehemently refuted as “ludicrous” by her advocates.
Aafia Movement Spokesman Muhammad Ayub today articulated that the assertion has caused considerable distress and anguish to Dr. Siddiqui”s children and family.
He confirmed that the organization”s secretariat has been contacted by numerous people expressing their concern over the AAG”s statement and showing solidarity with Dr. Siddiqui, for which the movement is thankful.
Ayub reminded the AAG”s office that the government of Pakistan has previously assured the court of its assistance in the case. He highlighted that last year, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had formally requested a presidential pardon for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui in a letter to the then US President Joe Biden.
The spokesman emphasized that saving the life of an innocent Pakistani must be the foremost priority for the government. He added that had the administration accepted court orders, it would not have received contempt of court notices, describing the courts as the “last hope of citizens.”
He remarked that at a time when cooperation from the government is being sought, the AAG”s declaration is “tantamount to sabotaging these efforts.” Ayub also invoked Islamic teachings, stating that rulers are bound to assist and protect their citizens.
Reaffirming her nationality, the spokesman recalled that Dr. Siddiqui”s late mother, Ismat Siddiqui, had presented proof through the media in 2008 that her daughter is a Pakistani citizen.
