(Health): Call to launch state-run health channel to educate public

KARACHI:Pakistan Nutrition and Dietetic Society (PNDS) organized the 17th annual general body meeting and panel discussion on topic “Promotion of Good Nutrition and Health by media professionals” at local hotel on Saturday.

 

Secretary General, Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), Dr Qaisar Sajjad, TV Anchor Sana Hashmi, social activist Shehryar Qureshi, Dr Naveed Bhutto, cooking expert Naheed Ansari, senior journalist Yasmin and others attended the event. President, PNDA, Fayaza Khan and General Secretary Mozamila Saeed were mediators of the panel discussion.

 

Speaking to the participants, Dr Qaisar Sajjad said health and education sectors had been badly neglected by the federal and provincial governments in the past. He lamented that there was no space for health awareness programs in mainstream media chancels and only political talkshows were being aired during prime time.

 

He stressed the need of introducing a complete health-related channel in Pakistan to aware and educate the general public about water-borne, vector borne and other lethal diseases like coronavirus in the future.

 

Dr Sajjad said that the mainstream and local media could play a big role to solve health related problems of the society. He suggested airing health awareness programs in channels to address issues linked with public health.

 

TV Anchor Sana Hashmi said scores of children die due to malnutrition and polluted water in Sindh and other provinces. She said joint efforts were needed to resolve public health issues.
