The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) today strongly condemned the alleged manhandling and brief detention of activists and reporters, including prominent rights advocate Sheema Kermani, by police outside the Karachi Press Club.
According to a statement posted on the social media platform X, the incident occurred yesterday when law enforcement obstructed a scheduled press conference organized by Aurat March Karachi.
The rights body also voiced alarm that journalist Ebrahim was reportedly barred from entering the press club premises during the confrontation. In its communication, the HRCP urged government authorities to respect and ensure all people’s access to civic spaces.
The commission has called for a formal investigation into the alleged police misconduct.
