India Grapples with Key Injury Blow Ahead of T20 World Cup Defence

India’s preparations for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 have been significantly impacted by a crucial injury setback, with key all-rounder Amanjot Kaur ruled out of the upcoming global tournament. Her absence presents a considerable challenge for the national side as they aim to clinch back-to-back ICC titles, following their triumph in the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup.

Head coach Amol Muzumdar confirmed the severity of the situation, stating, “She is injured and it is very difficult to replace somebody like Amanjot. She has been doing consistently well for India.” He added that Kaur is expected to be sidelined for at least four to five months. India captain Harmanpreet Kaur echoed these sentiments in a press conference, highlighting the difficulty in finding a suitable replacement for the seam-bowling all-rounder, whose contributions were vital to their 2025 success, according to a report today.

Despite this blow, a renewed hunger for championship glory permeates the Indian camp. Jemimah Rodrigues, a prominent batter, revealed that the drive for a second consecutive ICC title was ignited almost immediately after their 50-over World Cup victory on 2 November. Speaking at the IISM Degree Distribution Ceremony 2026, she affirmed, “Since we’ve won one, we want to win two.”

The team”s extensive preparation began far in advance of the squad announcement. Rodrigues explained that coach Muzumdar initiated the T20 World Cup planning during their first series against Sri Lanka, immediately following the 2025 success. “So we”ve been preparing from day one,” she noted, underscoring the squad”s readiness.

The squad for the ICC Women”s T20 World Cup 2026, unveiled on 2 May, generated discussion with the inclusion of uncapped pacer Nandani Sharma. Despite yet to make her international debut, Sharma has been fast-tracked into the national setup following an impressive showing in the Women”s Premier League.

During her stint under Rodrigues”s captaincy at Delhi Capitals, Sharma claimed 17 wickets across 10 matches. Rodrigues expressed confidence in the young bowler, stating, “Nandani has been fantastic for us. She proved herself not just in one game, but consistently across matches. With the experience in this squad, we”re confident she”ll flourish on the big stage.” Sharma is anticipated to fill the void created by Amanjot Kaur”s injury.

India is placed in Group A for the T20 tournament, alongside formidable opponents Australia, Bangladesh, Netherlands, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Their campaign is set to commence on 14 June with a highly anticipated fixture against Pakistan.
