JKLF to Commemorate Maqbool Butt’s Martyrdom Anniversary with Global Events

Islamabad: The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) has announced plans to observe the martyrdom anniversary of Muhammad Maqbool Butt, a prominent figure in the Kashmiri liberation movement, with ceremonies dedicated to honor his legacy. The anniversary will be marked with events both in the region and internationally, underscoring the enduring impact of Butt’s contributions to the cause.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, Butt was executed by Indian authorities on February 11, 1984, in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail, where his body remains interred. The JKLF’s central spokesperson emphasized that a grand tribute is planned to commemorate Butt’s sacrifice.

The upcoming observance on February 11 will feature various programs across occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, as well as in the United Kingdom, United States, Europe, and Gulf countries. These events will also renew the call for the return of the remains of both Maqbool Butt and Afzal Guru, another figure buried in Tihar Jail, to their homeland.

Further, the spokesperson criticized India’s celebration of Republic Day in the contested region, labeling it as an attempt to mislead international perception. The deployment of a large military presence and the incarceration of numerous Kashmiris, including key leaders, were highlighted as points of contention.

The statement also condemned the ban on the JKLF and other organizations, framing it as part of India’s broader strategy to silence Kashmiri voices through stringent laws. Despite these challenges, the JKLF reaffirmed its commitment to the pursuit of Kashmir’s independence.
