Pakistan has categorically rejected the life imprisonment sentence awarded to Kashmiri political leader Asia Andrabi by a Delhi court, and condemned the decision as a grave miscarriage of justice and a reflection of ongoing rights violations.
In a statement, Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Andrabi on Wednesday condemned the harsh sentences of 30 years imprisonment imposed on Ms. Andrabi’s two associates, Ms. Fehmida Sufi and Ms. Nahida Nasreen.
The spokesperson asserted that Islamabad views the court’s decision as part of a wider pattern of politically motivated prosecutions designed to silence dissenting voices and intimidate advocates for the legitimate rights of the Kashmiri people.
The sentencing raises serious concerns regarding due process, judicial independence, and adherence to international human rights obligations, the statement continued.
Describing Aasiya Andrabi as a long-time vocal advocate for the Kashmir cause, the foreign office representative said her conviction and severe penalty underscore the diminishing space for political expression and civil liberties in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
He communicated that Pakistan believes such actions will further exacerbate regional tensions and undermine prospects for peace and stability in South Asia.
Tahir Andrabi urged the international community, including the United Nations and global human rights organisations, to take immediate notice of this development and to hold India accountable for its conduct in IIOJK.
He called for the protection of the political, social, and human rights of the Kashmiri people, including their entitlement to freedom of expression and a fair trial.
The spokesperson concluded by reiterating Pakistan”s unwavering support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their just struggle for self-determination, as enshrined in relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
