Law Commission Prioritizes Family, Criminal Law Reform

The Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan (LJCP) has reaffirmed its dedication to substantial legal reforms, focusing on family law and the Code of Criminal Procedure during its 45th meeting held at the Supreme Court on Monday. Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, LJCP Chairman, led the session attended by High Court Chief Justices, the Attorney General, the Law Ministry Secretary, and eminent legal professionals like Makhdoom Ali Khan, Khawaja Haris Ahmed, Kamran Murtaza, and Muhammad Munir Paracha.

The gathering reviewed advancements made since the previous session, particularly the efforts of the Advisory Committee on Law Reforms concerning enhancements to family law and the outdated 1898 Criminal Procedure Code. The Commission commended the committee’s endeavors and urged continued collaboration with stakeholders to produce effective recommendations for improved legal proceedings.

Beyond the legislative agenda, the LJCP ratified the Access to Justice Development Fund (AJDF) accounts for the fiscal year 2024-25. Additionally, a new committee was established to reassess the LJCP Employees Service Rules from 1992, aiming to modernize administrative operations and implement performance-based evaluation.

Chief Justice Afridi concluded by emphasizing the LJCP’s unwavering pursuit of judicial excellence, institutional growth, and transformative alterations to establish a just, inclusive, and efficient legal framework in Pakistan.
