Licensing Drive Results in 500% Surge in Legal Drivers, Accidents Decline

A city-wide road safety initiative has resulted in the issuance of over 140,000 new driving permits, representing a significant 500% increase in the number of credentialed motorists and contributing to a notable reduction in traffic accidents.

According to a report by Islamabad Capital Police today, the ongoing campaign, launched by the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) on September 1, 2025, has successfully elevated the proportion of drivers with valid licenses from an initial 56 percent to the current 80 percent.

During the enforcement effort, which continues with full momentum, ITP officers have checked over 2,000 drivers. The ratio of licensed drivers first climbed to 76 percent before reaching its present level, indicating a positive trend toward ensuring only qualified individuals operate vehicles.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Capt. (R) Hamzah Humayun stated that the objective is to further raise this figure. “Our goal is to bring the ratio of licensed drivers up to 90 percent, similar to developed countries,” he said. “We are committed to making Islamabad a model city for road safety.”

The initiative was implemented under the directions of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi to address the growing need for improved road management and a higher number of certified drivers.

IGP Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi commended the dedication of ITP personnel, noting that proper licensing is a critical pillar of public protection and traffic safety.

To facilitate the process, the ITP has introduced a modern licensing system that includes a one-window service, digital appointments, and touch-screen theory tests to ensure driver competency.

CTO Hamzah Humayun confirmed that the enforcement campaign will persist across the federal capital to sustain improvements in traffic discipline, with the ITP aiming to achieve its 90 percent licensing target with public cooperation.
