The flagship Main Line-1 (ML-1) project is set to begin from Karachi Port in July 2026, Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi today announced, spearheading a major reform initiative aimed at tackling severe congestion by shifting cargo from roads to the railway network.
The minister revealed the development following a crucial meeting on January 9 in Karachi with Chairman Karachi Port Trust (KPT), Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed (Retd.). The discussions centred on measures to strengthen the railway system for more efficient cargo transportation from the nation”s busiest port.
As an immediate step to enhance capacity, Mr Abbasi stated that Pakistan Railways intends to operate a minimum of four freight trains daily within the next five months, with a priority on transporting bulk cargo.
A core component of the long-term strategy involves the ML-1 project, which will see the 54-kilometre railway section from KPT to Pipri upgraded to facilitate the seamless movement of goods.
During the meeting, both officials concurred that rail-based freight is a cost-effective and sustainable solution to improve logistics efficiency and bolster trade activities, significantly reducing the burden on congested port-side road networks.
Emphasising the strategic importance of Karachi Port to national and international trade, the federal minister underscored the need for close coordination between Pakistan Railways and KPT to elevate port logistics performance.
In a corresponding commitment, Chairman KPT Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed (Retd.) confirmed that the port authority will upgrade its internal railway tracks and work in close collaboration with Pakistan Railways to fortify rail-linked infrastructure.
Both parties agreed the enhanced rail connectivity is expected to lower logistics costs, improve vessel turnaround times, and make a substantial contribution to the growth of trade, industry, and the national economy.
