Mayor Orders Swift Completion of Karachi’s Storm Water Drain Cleaning

Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab today continued his inspection of the city’s ongoing storm water drain cleaning campaign for the third consecutive day by visiting various locations across the city.

During the visit, he inspected the City Drain located in the Railway Colony near I.I. Chundrigar Road. Municipal Commissioner KMC Abrar Jaffar, Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentary Leader in the City Council Karamullah Waqasi, Senior Director Municipal Services Iqbal Nawaz, KMC officials, and others accompanied him and briefed him on the progress of the drain cleaning operations.

The mayor said that the drain, situated near the city’s downtown area, is of great importance. Therefore, it is being thoroughly cleaned before the onset of the monsoon season to ensure the uninterrupted flow of rainwater and prevent urban flooding. He directed the concerned officials to complete the cleaning work within the stipulated timeframe while maintaining the highest standards, adding that no negligence would be tolerated.

Wahab said that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is making every possible effort not only to complete the drain cleaning operations efficiently but also to finalize all other necessary monsoon preparedness measures in a timely manner to minimize inconvenience to citizens. He said the drain cleaning campaign would continue until September 15 and added that KMC was also ready to extend every possible assistance to the Town Municipal Corporations whenever required.

He further directed officials to ensure that silt, garbage, and debris removed from the drains are immediately transported to designated disposal sites to prevent blockages from recurring and to avoid inconvenience for residents and road users in the surrounding areas. He emphasized that all phases of the operation should be monitored daily and that additional machinery and manpower should be deployed wherever necessary.

The mayor said that KMC is implementing a comprehensive strategy to address the potential impacts of the monsoon season. The strategy includes the cleaning of both major and minor storm water drains, improving the rainwater drainage system, and maintaining close coordination with all relevant institutions. He added that providing improved municipal services and ensuring that citizens’ daily lives remain unaffected during the rainy season are among KMC’s highest priorities.

Wahab said that he is personally supervising the drain cleaning operations on a daily basis, while elected public representatives are also monitoring the work in their respective areas to ensure effective implementation. He reiterated that every effort is being made to provide better municipal services to citizens and to keep the city’s drainage system fully functional throughout the monsoon season.
