Officials Address Major Utility Relocation Hurdles in Karachi’s Red Line BRT Project

The complex task of relocating extensive underground and surface-level utilities has been identified as a primary challenge in the construction of the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.

Officials stated this during a high-level briefing with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), according to an official information today. The issue was a central topic in a meeting between Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and an ADB delegation led by Country Director Emma Fenn. The briefing provided the visiting officials with a detailed overview of the project”s current phases, construction progress, and remaining technical matters.

The provincial delegation included Secretary Transport Asad Zamin and CEO Trans Karachi Fawad Ghaffar Soomro. The ADB team comprised Deputy Country Director Asad Aleem, Project Officer Hamid Khan, Khayyam Abbasi, and Syed Adnan.

Minister Memon, who also holds the portfolios for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, affirmed the administration”s commitment to making the Red Line BRT an exemplary public works initiative. He conveyed that the Sindh government is exerting continuous effort to expedite the project’s completion, noting that project offices remain operational at all hours for diligent monitoring.

Explaining the complexities, the minister described Karachi as a large metropolitan area with a dense network of utilities managed by various entities, which made their relocation a formidable task. He reported that most technical obstacles have been overcome, and a coordinated strategy is in place to manage the remaining issues, allowing construction to now move forward steadily.

The ADB delegation expressed satisfaction with the current pace of work and the administrative efforts behind it. The bank”s representatives noted their aspiration for the Red Line BRT to become an excellent and award-winning development.

Country Director Emma Fenn remarked on the effective and ongoing cooperation with the Sindh Transport Department, stating that joint efforts would deliver quality transport facilities to the people of Karachi. Minister Memon reciprocated by acknowledging the Sindh government”s appreciation for its partnership with the ADB, promising that the project would be finished as soon as possible to provide modern travel conveniences to the citizenry.
