Only sustained talks can resolve Kashmir dispute: Mirwaiz

Srinagar, February 23, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the Chairman of Hurriyat forum, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has said that only sustained dialogue can lead to the settlement of the lingering Kashmir dispute. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in a statement issued in Srinagar urged people of India to understand ground situation in Kashmir, saying people of the Valley are not fighting for any economic package or developmental schemes but for a legitimate birth right to right to self-determination.

He said New Delhi must understand that the talk about waging war against Pakistan will lead to destruction in the entire South Asian region as both the countries are nuclear powers. He said, “Kashmiris don’t support war between India and Pakistan but a resolution of the dispute by peaceful means. History is witness that many nations even after fighting wars, had to sit on a negotiation table to hammer out solutions of the issues.”

The Mirwaiz said he has time and again stated that Kashmir cannot be resolved militarily. He took a dig at present dispensation at New Delhi for its iron-fist policy on Kashmir. He said, “I want to convey to the people of India that Kashmir is not Bihar or Himachal or any other Indian state but a disputed territory, divided between India and Pakistan.”

Referring to harassment and attacks on Kashmiri students and businessmen in Jammu and different parts of India, post Lethpora incident, the Mirwaiz termed it a well-planned conspiracy. “This all started first from Jammu where dozens of vehicles were torched by fanatic forces who have always been anti-Kashmir and anti-Muslim from day one,” he said, adding this anti-Kashmir hatred later spread to different cities of India.

Meanwhile, hundreds of youth registered themselves at a voluntary recruitment camp organised by youth wing of Awami Action Committee (AAC) at Jamia Masjid in Srinagar to voluntarily protect Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. President of AAC Youth, Mushtaq Sufi, in a statement, lauding the enthusiasm of youth, said it is a welcome development that hundreds of youth are coming forward to voluntarily guard Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.
