The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has undertaken a massive crackdown on hazardous and illegal constructions, carrying out 1,622 demolition operations across all districts of Karachi and other regions since the start of the year, an official statement confirmed on Friday.
This sustained initiative, aimed at preventing loss of life and restoring public confidence in urban management, is being conducted under the directives of Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah and the supervision of SBCA Director General Muzamil Hussain Halepoto.
Director General Muzamil Hussain Halepoto declared that the authority”s primary objective is to protect citizens from the risks posed by unauthorized structures. ‘No citizen should lose their life due to a collapsing building. Our teams are taking decisive steps to ensure compliance and safety,’ he stated, emphasizing that a zero-tolerance policy against illegal constructions is being strictly enforced province-wide.
The comprehensive campaign follows a province-wide survey of dangerous buildings launched earlier this month, which resulted in orders for their immediate demolition. The data reveals a consistent effort throughout 2025, with 153 actions in January, 110 in February, 146 in March, 179 in April, 135 in May, and 121 in June. The drive intensified with 240 operations in July, followed by 171 in August, 159 in September, 185 in October, and 23 in the first five days of November.
Halepoto reaffirmed the SBCA’s unwavering commitment to eliminating structurally weak constructions that endanger human lives. ‘Our teams are working day and night to identify, seal, and demolish hazardous structures. Every unsafe or illegal building poses a potential threat to innocent citizens – and we cannot allow negligence or violations of law to continue,’ he asserted, highlighting that the campaign reflects the government’s resolve to enforce building laws without discrimination.
The Director General also appealed for public cooperation, urging residents to report any illegal or unsafe buildings in their vicinity and assuring that all complaints would be handled promptly. ‘A safer, well-regulated, and planned Karachi is our shared responsibility. Together, we can prevent tragedies and ensure that future constructions strictly comply with legal and safety standards,’ he added.
