Pakistan Accuses India of Unlawful Treaty Violation Threatening 240 Million

Pakistan has accused India of taking destabilising action by unilaterally holding the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance, an act which it claims threatens the lives and livelihoods of over 240 million Pakistanis.

According to a report by MOIB today, the declaration was made by Chairman Senate Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, who argued today that the move constituted a blatant violation of the treaty”s provisions and the established principles of customary international law.

Mr Gilani made the remarks during a meeting with the President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, held on the sidelines of the Annual IPU Parliamentary Hearing 2026 at the United Nations headquarters.

He emphasised that such actions set dangerous precedents, particularly in an era of climate stress and water scarcity that demands enhanced cooperation and a strict adherence to international agreements.

The Chairman Senate also highlighted that resolutions from the UN Security Council on Jammu and Kashmir remained unimplemented and called for stronger multilateral cooperation and concerted action against terrorism.

During the meeting, the President of the UN General Assembly conveyed her condolences to the government and people of Pakistan for the loss of lives in recent terrorist incidents. Ms Baerbock stated that it is in the interest of all nations to combat terrorism collectively.

Mr Gilani concluded by underscoring that the people of Pakistan strongly support the United Nations’ mission of fostering international peace and security, sustainable development, and the protection of human rights.
