Pakistan and Australia Near Breakthrough on Modernized Investment Treaty to Unlock Key Sectors

Pakistan and Australia have made ‘significant progress’ toward revamping a decades-old investment agreement, concluding a pivotal round of in-person negotiations on Thursday with a shared commitment to finalizing a modern pact designed to boost capital flows between the two nations.

The delegations engaged in positive and professional discussions, undertaking a comprehensive review of the initial articles for the proposed updated Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT). The dialogue, marked by a spirit of mutual understanding, resulted in the signing of the Agreed Minutes, formally documenting the advancements achieved.

Both countries affirmed their intention to continue the dialogue to finalize a balanced and forward-looking framework. The modernized agreement aims to enhance investment and safeguard the legitimate interests of both Pakistan and Australia.

Federal Minister for Board of Investment, Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, who headed the Pakistani delegation, praised the constructive engagement. He reiterated the government’s resolve to establish a transparent investment regime that aligns with global best practices.

Mr. Sheikh stated that Pakistan is embarking on a new phase of investment policy reforms intended to bolster investor confidence and foster long-term economic cooperation with international partners. He emphasized that an updated BIT would help unlock substantial opportunities in critical sectors such as energy, mining, technology, agriculture, and industrial development.

The Minister expressed confidence that the successful modernization of the 1998 accord will pave the way for increased commercial ties and a mutually beneficial framework that supports sustainable economic growth for both countries.

The Board of Investment reaffirmed its dedication to promoting investment-friendly policies and strengthening bilateral partnerships to support both domestic and foreign investors in driving Pakistan’s economic progress.
