In a significant move to bolster regional strategic partnerships, Pakistan and Tajikistan have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation in defence, energy, and trade, following a high-level meeting between Tajik Defence Minister Colonel General Sabirzoda Emomali Abdulrahim and President Asif Ali Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Friday.
During the high-level discussion, President Zardari emphasized Pakistan’s profound appreciation for its enduring and multifaceted relationship with Tajikistan, which he noted is anchored in common history, cultural affinity, and linguistic connections. He recalled that Pakistan was among the initial nations to recognize Tajikistan’s sovereignty following its independence in 1992.
The President described Tajikistan as a “bridge to the heart of Central Asia,” highlighting Pakistan’s corresponding role as a crucial gateway to international waters for the landlocked nation. He asserted that the two states, working in concert, could play a pivotal role in fostering regional peace and stability.
Highlighting the extensive potential for increased commercial and investment activities, President Zardari specifically pointed to the energy sector. He reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to the prompt finalization of the CASA-1000 power project, calling it a flagship initiative of regional collaboration.
The dialogue also touched upon the growing military ties, with the President expressing contentment over the frequent exchanges between the two armed forces. The successful execution of the joint “Dosti-II” military exercise was cited as a key indicator of this strengthening defence relationship.
Colonel General Sabirzoda Emomali Abdulrahim conveyed his nation’s keen interest in augmenting cooperation with Pakistan across various domains, with a particular focus on defence, security, and energy. The Tajik delegation also included Ambassador Sharifzoda Yusuf Tohir and other senior military officials. Senators Sherry Rehman and Saleem Mandviwalla were also in attendance.
The engagement concluded with both parties voicing optimism for enhanced strategic engagement and the cultivation of stronger people-to-people and cultural linkages between the two countries.
